By: 0

Its our pleasure to acknowledge Michael Darby as the June Athlete of the Month! Michael has been with us for a short time but has been in almost everyday and received the results. Not to long ago he got his first pull-up! Taking the time outside of class to achieve this goal has show his dedication to improving himself. Michael knows that the work inside of the gym can improve one’s self outside as well! Learn more about Michael below.

How long have you been at Willow Creek CrossFit and what made you want to join?

I have been at WCCF since mid February. I had though about joining for a while earlier as a way to lose weight, but I was honestly too nervous. After I lost about 70 pounds I was getting really bored of just running and was starting to hit a plateau. When I talked to my mom she pulled out her phone and started to sign me up for the intro session so I couldn’t have any way to back out. And I can’t thank her enough for that.

How is your life different after being a member at Willow Creek CrossFit?

My life is honestly much better since joining. Having a community of people that are all working towards the same, yet individual, goals has been huge! I no longer go home from work and just sit all night. The other difference has been my confidence levels. When I first joined heard that people were doing heavy thrusters, muscle ups and HSPU and I honestly didn’t even think I would ever be able to do any of those things. Now, I love looking at my weaknesses, inside and out of the gym, and thinking of ways to improve myself to make any obstacle something that I can achieve.

Whats your favorite part about the gym or a favorite moment?

My two favorite moments have been 18.1 and when I got my first pull up. 18.1 was the first time I thought about throwing up and the first I ripped my hands, but it was that night when I got hooked on Crossfit. Seeing everybody competing and supporting each other was incredible. And, my whole life I just kinda assumed I wouldn’t be able to do movements like pull-ups, but after getting my first real one I knew that anything is within my reach.

What’s your spirit animal?

I would probably have to say a bear.

What are your interests outside of work and the gym?

I am really passionate about music. This includes listening, performing, teaching, directing and also analyzing. Some of you may have heard about my music podcast that is like 85 percent close to being ready to record. Also, I am really interested in roasting my own coffee. I am kind of at a sticking point in terms of production, but currently I am working on a cold brew recipe involving some of the things from my garden.

What has been your favorite workout/movement?

I think most people will disagree with me, but I love the 25-30 minute wods. I love the feeling afterwards when you have nothing left, you are completely exhausted but all of my stress is gone, and somehow I always feel so good an hour or so after.

Give us an interesting fact that we don’t already know about you.

Something that most people don’t know about me is that the coolest thing I’ve done is conduct a choir/orchestra concert in the national cathedral of Bolivia that was aired across the country.

Thanks Michael!
